Press release -

Julian Opie opens exhibition JO.VR/GF15@Moss at Galleri F 15

Internationally acclaimed artist Julian Opie shows recent works in his solo exhibition JO.VR/GF15@Moss at Galleri F 15, 21 October – 6 March.

Visitors to JO.VR/GF15@Moss will have the opportunity to experience the work of British artist Julian Opie throughout the grounds of F 15, in both real and virtual space. A crowd of LED crows peck in the woodland, the galleries are peopled with Opie’s colourful striding figures, and a VR installation allows visitors to immerse in an alternative museum space, filled with related installations.

Always exploring different techniques both cutting edge and ancient, Opie plays with ways of seeing through reinterpreting the vocabulary of everyday life; his reductive style evokes both a visual and spatial experience of the world around us.

Taking influence from classical portraiture, Egyptian hieroglyphs and Japanese woodblock prints, as well as public signage, information boards and traffic signs, Opie connects the clean visual language of modern life, with the fundamentals of art history.

The exhibition is curated by Dag Aak Sveinar.

Julian Opie was born in 1958 in London. From 1979 to 1983, he studied at London’s Goldsmiths College, where his tutors included the artist Michael Craig-Martin. He lives and works in London. Opie’s distinctive formal language is instantly recognisable and reflects his artistic preoccupation with the idea of representation, and the means by which images are perceived and understood. He is celebrated internationally as one of the world’s most influential contemporary artists.

Opie’s works are held in a number of public collections including Tate, the British Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum, Arts Council England and the National Portrait Gallery in the UK, as well as Stedelijk Museum (Netherlands), M + Museum ( Hong Kong), Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Portugal) and MoMA (USA) internationally. He has exhibited at many major galleries and art institutions worldwide, including the Hayward Gallery (London), Berardo Museum (Lisboa), Mito Tower (Japan), Fosun Foundation (Shanghai), National Gallery of Victoria (Australia) and the Institute of Contemporary Art (Boston, USA), as well as Delhi Triennial, NGV Triennial, Sydney Biennial and Documenta.

Galleri F 15 og Momentum

Gallery F 15 was established in 1966 and is one of Norway's oldest and most prestigious exhibition venues for Norwegian and Nordic contemporary arts and crafts. The unique nature of the gallery lies in the unique combination of the art and the site's architecture in a 19th-century courtyard and situated in a historic country house landscape at Jeløy in Moss.

The MOMENTUM BIENNALE was shown for the first time in 1998 and is today one of the most long-standing and important arenas for contemporary art in the Nordics. MOMENTUM is Galleri F 15’s most significant international commitment and is held every two years.
